FAQs

I have no martial arts experience, can I come to a class?

Yes, of course! The classes are suitable for all levels from novice through to black-belt. We have a structured curriculum that will ensure that you develop the correct techniques and a sound understanding of BJJ as a martial art.

What should I bring to class?

For your first class, wear comfortable clothing and bring a bottle of water for after training. Please remove jewellery, such as watches, rings and necklaces. Long hair must be tied back.  We do not wear shoes on the mats. You can purchase a Gi (top and trousers) from your instructor.

Can I do private classes if I don’t want to do group glasses?

Private classes are the best way to develop your techniques. They are suitable for students of all levels.

Do I have to compete?

No, you can progress through the BJJ grading system (belts) without ever competing. However, if you would like to compete, the Roots BJJ team will help you to prepare for competitions.

Can kids do BJJ?

Yes, of course! We have Children’s classes that follow a different grading system.
