South American BJJ Championship

Monday, December 12, 2011

Prof. Thiago Braga took 5 ROOTS BJJ fighters from our Broadway branch to compete in Brazil at the South American BJJ Championship in Florianopolis and also stay 3 more weeks training at our friend gym Gheto BJJ Academy in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

Prof. Thiago reports:

"It was great to be competing at the South American BJJ Championship with the Roots boys and the support from Gheto Jiu Jitsu!

First ROOTS fighter to compete was Mike Marzano. Mike fought really well his first fight scoring a few points on his opponent.

Brian Falzon had a very technical fight which in the end unfortunately went in favor of his opponent by one advantage who also  ended up winning the next 3 fights and becoming the champion.

Hadfield Mitchell had a very tough fight in the semi-final but lost by points ending up in 3rd place.

Steve Carr after battling against 3 Brazilian opponents in his division ended up with the Gold, well deserved!

Thiago Braga not different to Brian or Mitch met the champion in his first fight and ended up out of the comp early.

The most important was that even after over 20 hours on a plane plus 8 on the road, despite the flat tyre and beds flying our way on the freeway... there were no excuses or complains.

Everyone got on the mats and fought as hard as they could!

After 2 days of comp in Florianopolis in South Brazil we headed back to Porto Alegre and no rest. Intensive 2 sessions a day starting on Monday under approx 30 degrees Celsius and at least 90% humidity."
