4 november |

A BIG CHEER to Tanya Youkhana our girl from ROOTS Edensor Park academy who was in Brazil since August this year training for 3 months and had her 1st BJJ competition ever at Rio’s State Titles on Nov 4th winning GOLD in her white belt division and putting once again our ROOTS Australia name on the podium in Brazilian territory!!!

Here's the fight in tanya's own words..

"Just to let you all know fight went awesome I was approached from many and told that was the best female fight for the day, I was supported by friends and many BTT guys that all came even though there fights were on the next day, the respect, support and turn out was great!!!

I nervously was so nervous only one fight but she was from De la riva, I spoke to her before she said she was going good, I watched on my female friend from BTT blue belt and 2006 Brazilian champion lose and my best mate blue belt with me next up....

I freaked out the first minute, and tried many times to trip here and shake her down with no luck, she jumped on me so I decided to carry her, she put a quick choke on still rapped around me, I bent my knees slipped out of the choke and dropped her, she tried a triangle got out of that and then a arm
lock/bar which I grabbed her knees threw her and got side control.... I got side control and mount like 3 times each as she was fighting hard, and I ended up on 17 points with some great help from the side telling me to relax, I ended up in guard slipped into an arm lock/bar she stood to get out I twisted with her and she fell I put the arm lock/bar on hard and
submitted and won, was a really good fight to watch and I was cheered on the feeling was amazing the first of many I hope to god.....

See you all soon Tanya"

Congratulations Tanya from all of us at ROOTS for a job well done!

Tanya 1st in BJJ Rio Brazil!

Did you Know... That Brazilian Jiu Jitsu comes from Japan??

Well kind of... Brazilian JiuJitsu is based on a modified version of the traditional Japanese Jujutsu called "jiu-do" which is based on the idea of the soft overcoming the hard. In other words, a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant.

The art began when Mitsuyo Maeda, a master of Japanese ju jitsu and judo / Jiu-do, which was the changing of jujutsu training methods to a non-lethal degree and also where Helio Gracie got the word "jiu" from.

Maeda immigrated to Brazil where he taught his system to Carlos Gracie, who passed it on to his younger brother Helio. The brothers trained many of their sons, who now carry on the family tradition today.

The Gracie family continued to develop the system throughout the 20th century, often fighting vale tudo matches (precursors to modern MMA or Mixed Martial Arts), during which it gained its focus on ground fighting and refined its techniques.

You should ALWAYS check the lineage of your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Teacher and make sure that they have trained with the Gracie family been trained by someone who has studied with the Gracie family.

Paulo Guimaraes studied under Jorge Pereira who studied directly with the Gracie family. Paulo has also been World Champion in Brazilian JiuJitsu.
