Korea Instructor: Jaesub Jo

I made Martial Arts my life goal when I began learning Taekwondo in high   school in 1987.

Also, I began to learn Muay Thai in 1993 and have been an athlete for   approximately ten years.

I have traveled around Thailand, Japan, and Cambodia, competing in many   Muay Thai competitions.

I came into contact with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu when I was a Muay Thai   instructor at the Mixed Martial Arts Dojo of Korea, teaching Mixed Martial   Arts and Muay Thai in 2003.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu became known in Korea in 2002 when Mixed Martial Arts competitions were experiencing a boom.

I liked the rational fighting style of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and decided to seriously learn it and since Brazilian Jiu-jitsu had already spread in Korea, I was able to learn from a Korean instructor with a purple belt.

A passion to learn Brazilian Jiu-jitsu became stronger as I learned more   and while I was looking for a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Master on the internet, I came to know professor Paulo in Australia, not too far from Korea.

In 2005, I went to Australia to learn Jiu-jitsu from Professor Paulo. I   was able to learn truly traditional Brazilian Jiu-jitsu at the ROOTS  Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy on Bondi Beach in NSW state of Australia.

At first, after receiving training in Australia, I became completely  captivated by the Brazilian style of ROOTS and I stayed in Australia for a year learning Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. That time gave me the best days of my life.

Now I have returned to Korea and have opened an academy, teaching both   Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

I want the students who learn Martial Arts from me not to stop at just learning Martial Arts, but through it, to learn patience, consideration for others, and great joy that could not be found in ordinary life.

Did you Know... That Brazilian Jiu Jitsu comes from Japan??

Well kind of... Brazilian JiuJitsu is based on a modified version of the traditional Japanese Jujutsu called "jiu-do" which is based on the idea of the soft overcoming the hard. In other words, a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant.

The art began when Mitsuyo Maeda, a master of Japanese ju jitsu and judo / Jiu-do, which was the changing of jujutsu training methods to a non-lethal degree and also where Helio Gracie got the word "jiu" from.

Maeda immigrated to Brazil where he taught his system to Carlos Gracie, who passed it on to his younger brother Helio. The brothers trained many of their sons, who now carry on the family tradition today.

The Gracie family continued to develop the system throughout the 20th century, often fighting vale tudo matches (precursors to modern MMA or Mixed Martial Arts), during which it gained its focus on ground fighting and refined its techniques.

You should ALWAYS check the lineage of your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Teacher and make sure that they have trained with the Gracie family been trained by someone who has studied with the Gracie family.

Paulo Guimaraes studied under Jorge Pereira who studied directly with the Gracie family. Paulo has also been World Champion in Brazilian JiuJitsu.
